Artist of the Year Award

Visual Arts Guild of Frisco drafts 2022 Artist of the Year to create the 2023 award

Art Appreciaton Awards

The Visual Arts Guild of Frisco Artist of the Year for 2023 has been named.

Congratulations, Amanda Hay!

Artist of the Year 2023 before the name was announced.

I had only hoped the next Artist of the Year would enjoy owning as much I enjoyed making it. I believe she is.

A cool idea!

This award will be given with a twist. The Artist of 2023 will receive this metal art created by the Artist of the Year of 2022. Cool idea, huh? Well, I think so.

I've enjoyed working with the VAGF board in making this piece to be given to the new Artist of Year for 2023.

My congratulations to Amanda Hay, Artist of the Year 2023!

Experimentation in progress

Art to me is about exploring and experimenting with ideas. This piece, even though it has a specific duty to perform in the social context of an award, is no different. In it are several experiments with tools, methods, use of materials as well as the human factors involved in making trophies and awards, which are many more than one might think. The size proportion, weight, tactile surfaces, touchability and sensei of vaulue and other visual connotations are all considerations in the design.

The base is cut from a solid plate of steel in the shape of an artist’s palette. It connects to the upper body via the artist’s signature five bolt pattern. Copyright r.e.belveal 2018

What happened is

Last year, I was so honored by this organization that speaks for the art community of Frisco, TX, the fastest growing city in the US most of the past two decades and many more accolades, including Sports City USA. And that always brings up the question, "Can't we be more than one thing? And the answer is of course, "Well, why not?" We can be Sports City, Live Music City AND Arts City all at the same time. We're that good!

Anyway, they had the gumption to call me Artist of the Year 2022.

Hmmm. Well, they are very nice people. I know that. I've been hanging around these art people in Frisco awhile and I like them a lot. And I think they like me. Yet, somehow, I don't think that alone explains why they would select me to be the first recipient of this prestigious award.

So, what is it?

Since I retired from my day job making all the world digital, I have been focused on the unanswered questions from a three decade career of human factors in computing. My Art has become my sandbox for testing hypotheses formed over years of observing human beings encountering software, Often, it isn't pretty. But you see things that make you go, Aha. I am now using those Aha moments in my art. I think that makes me different, Aha!

More where this came from

Upon close inspection, you’ll see several inventions of assembly methods and repeatable, flexible and extendible architecture that makes this more than a single one-off piece of art. It is a prototype for a whole family of such art works, all protected unber art copyright r,e,belveal 2023

What’s Ahead?

With this genre launched, I am geared for follow-on activity in the awards space. Sneak peek - Look for SportsCity.art to be a thing.

Roundavu

Then, my energy will be focused on Roundavu. Roundavu is huge. Cannot say when yet. Look for it.
