Visual Arts Guild of Frisco - Connecting Art+Tech

art & technology are one in Frisco

this Arts Visual Guild logo sculpted in CAT6 cable says so

And so do renaissance guys like Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci and me

The Visual Arts Guild of Frisco, VAGF logo sculpted in colorful ethernet cable

Visual Arts Guild of Frisco

My friends at the Visual Arts Guild of Frisco (VAGF) have been doing a great job for a long time in connecting Frisco artists to opportunities and resources in the area. They’re deserving of any attentions and kudus we can give them.

And Tech too?

What people might not know is that the guild has taken that mission further, connecting creatives in technology and business as well. Find them at vagf.org

reasons of this art piece

This is both a tribute to The VAGF and, … Okay, I admit it, I was dying to see what their logo would look like rendered in 3D using ethernet cable. Weren’t you? Oh, was that just me?

What if …..

How do you say Connections?

The Visual Arts Guild is about connections. So, it seemed fitting to use network cables. Right? And especially since COVID, virtual matters more than ever.

So, Did it connect?

A gracious audience response

“"Thank you, Roger for the beautifully crafted sculpture gifted to the VAGF! “😍

“I was blown away 😳 and felt a connection not just to the network wires of the Sculpture, also to the hardwork put into and love poured over the VAGF ...embodied in cold / hard steel but lifted above is the never-ending circle of life, colorful life we bring to the organization with the many interweaving arts, mediums of art, the connections we make networking with others in the arts world and the legacy we will leave behind continues in that circle...continuous giving, learning intertwined, linking generations before and after us”

- Jennifer Luney Bejtović, VAGF

Art is an experimeNt

I wanted to know

The idea of the logo in 3D grabbed my curiosity because I had been sketching very similar looking things, only larger. This looked like an ideal place to try out some new methods I had in mind. So it served my technical purpose very well.

More Cable? Yes!

I have many more ideas in mind for this method and materials. I'm actually an industrial designer by education and obsessing over methods and materials is what we do.

The connection

I haven’t stopped being an experience designer. So when I make art, I am really interested in what thoughts and experiences it stirs in the audience.  Do people feel a connection?  What is it and why?  To delve into that is way more interesting than just do people "Like" it.

about Experiences

This explains why I tend to pick subject matter that has some meaning to people already, I love images that are iconic and play some social role and purpose.

Why i love Sculpture

We are Sculpture

This highlights some of the reasons I choose sculpture over 2D mediums. I love 2D art in all of its forms, painting, photography, etc. But there's something about an object that shares your space.  We are 3D creatures with physical substance and so is it.  There's a comradery.

It’s alive

It never looks exactly the same way twice. Different lighting, location, times of day, shadows, reflections, angles of view - its always changing. Sometimes, just a glance is powerful.  Sometimes shadows are the star.

Simply irresistible

And watch with me, Tell me if you don't see: People cannot resist touching it.  (And I design with that in mind) .

Weight fOr it

And people want to feel the weight. They'll nudge it sideways or give it a little lift just to feel that satisfying weight. And then watch them get a vey slight smile.  :-) That's fun to watch.

Solid relief

Even when we look at photos of real sculpture, we get a feeling that we have touched something real.  For an over-digitized culture, touchable sculpture is welcome “relief.”

Can a painting Do that?

My Art, My science lab

While Exploring concepts relation o human experience with technology in Art, I discovered something that might valuable for web3. Art might be a better sandbox for discovering web3 than we2. Art may be a better science lab than the science lab

The power of Circles

I’m very much into circles these days. I feel like I’ve discovered the wheel, maybe Ezekiel’s wheel. It’s more magical than I imagined.

Information Architectture

As for mapping content in an experience online or offline, a circle has intrinsic capabilities that are frequently overlooked.

Mapping experiences

How frequently do we use the term circle or loop to describe an experience or an encounter,

Social Circles

From the prehistoric campfire to the Knights of the Round Table to you own circle of friends gathered around the kitten table or the many meager attempts made in social media to model these things, the circle remains the mental model for relationships.

Reinventing the Wheel?

Web3 and the wheel? And the M word? Shhhh. I’m still working on it. I’ll let you know as soon as it is ready to divulge. I think you’ll be excited.

Get ready to build something

Not only do I think you’ll like this concept, i think you’re gonna wanna build something. So whatever it is that you do, whether coding, publishing, physical art, NFTs, dance, poetry, or creating game worlds, whatever, get ready.

Staying In the loop
